Crosland Heath Golf Club sits on the hills above Huddersfield enjoying stunning views over the Colne Valley. Founded in 1914, it is a flat, heathland, walking course with firm, springy fairways, measuring just over 6100 yards and is a great example of Dr Alister Mackenzie’s work, who also designed the Augusta course in the US.  The club is currently working hard on the course to restore it to its original design, returning to one of his major design principles of having the par 5 and 3 holes running to all points of the compass. In summer the views are superb, along with a wall of Heath that comes in to bloom in July and August. Crosland Heath places a premium on accuracy and being able to control your ball in the wind, a feature of its lofty position.

Richard Lambert has been the professional at the club since 2009.  Now, in 2017, he has been elected to Advanced PGA professional and is also a member of the Today's Golfer Top 50 golf coaches in the U.K.  We asked him about his favourite hole at Crosland Heath: “It has to be the 16th. A par 4 which demands an accurate drive because of the trees and a huge band of Heath to the left. The green is small and is set in a bowl at an angle to the player. It may only be 380 yards, but the second part of the hole is played uphill so it plays much longer than its yardage.”

We also quizzed him on the hardest hole: “The 5th plays into the wind and is a 440-yard par 4 although members play it as a par 5. There are lots of mounds and heather that come in to play off the tee, and even more heather to avoid with the second shot. The green is very long, over 40 yards in fact, so even if you do get up in 2 you can face a huge putt.”  Sounds like quite a challenge.

"The Heath" as it is known locally has its usual packed summer schedule and this winter will be playing host to an event on the inaugural Yorkshire PGA winter series which promises to be a highlight of their calendar.

The club is one of the friendliest places to be a member and extends a warm Yorkshire welcome to visitors whether Society or Individual players. Crosland Heath has a great offer which is £100 per 4 ball on a Monday including a light lunch, available all year.
