It’s not just the world of golf that we like to explore, we also like to poke our noses around in some other utterly British sports. Andrew Gale is a name synonymous with Cricket, and also with Yorkshire - it is a match made in heaven! Captaining the Yorkshire County Cricket team, Andrew has been a Brand Ambassador with us for almost a year, and it has been an absolute pleasure to work with this true Yorkshireman.
At the top of his game, Andrew has been a professional cricketer for 14 years, managing an exceptionally successful past few seasons winning the County Championship back-to-back. But it wasn’t always cricket that appealed to a younger Andrew – when he was first getting into the sport, it was football which originally called out to him. However, cricket soon became his passion and he can add time with the England U15 and U19 Youth teams to his CV. The football didn’t totally leave Andrew’s life though, as (when he gets a chance) he does still go and support Huddersfield Town FC – the local club…but ask him if he gets to go often and he’d probably say no – the 3 kids he has at home see to that (and all the running around after them keeps him Cricket-fit!)
“I have based my career on hard work and dedication”, Andrew tells us, “I’m not a guy who has the most natural talent in the world, but I do take a lot of pride in my preparation. I train hard to give myself the best possible chance to succeed.” And succeed he does, becoming the youngest captain of the county post-War in December 2009 and the first Yorkshire captain to lift the LV County Championship for 13 years. None of this has made him superstitious, however, the only niggle he has? “I hate odd numbers. Don’t ask why, but I won’t have the volume on an odd number in my car!” Although not overly superstitious, Andrew does put a lot of emphasis on hard work – his advice to anyone getting into cricket? “Work hard to improve every day, and always take the positive option.” When asked about his sporting hero, Andrew opted for Ricky Ponting – the former Australian cricketer. Taking into account both Ricky’s determination and career, he has been (and continues to be) an inspiration for Andrew.
Moving on to why he likes to be a Brand Ambassador with the Finest British Knitwear company, Andrew told us that he likes to associate himself with the best products, irrelevant of their market, and Glenbrae offers that. Andrew resonates with the strong family element which is core to our business, and loves the coincidence that the garment fits him perfectly, too! Usually opting to wear the knitwear with a pair of chinos or jeans, Andrew isn’t the type of Ambassador who wears his garments when playing in his professional capacity. Favouring the Lambswool Zip Neck (which is a firm office-favourite, too), Andrew always opts for the brighter colours (especially when dabbling in golf, as Andrew comments “I like bright colours as flair is always encouraged…although my game doesn’t always necessarily back that up!”)
