Glasgow Golf Club was founded in 1787 making it the 9th oldest golf club in the world. It is unusual in that it has two courses 32 miles apart, both included in the membership. The club has so much variety to offer the golfer.
The first course, Killermont, is based on the North bank of the River Kelvin, and just five miles from Glasgow city centre and is a tree lined, mature parkland course laid out by Old Tom Morris in 1903. It is quite flat and gentle with very sloping greens and suits all level of golfer. In the mid 1990s the course was re-designed by Dave Thomas to enhance the experience for members.
The second, Gailes Links, is on the Ayrshire coast in Irvine and is a links championship course which tests all abilities. It was designed by legendary golf architect Willie Park Jnr of Musselburgh and was opened in 1892. In July Gailes will host the Final Qualifying for The Open Championship which gives you an idea of the standard of the course. John Greaves is the PGA Professional at Glasgow Golf Club and he told us more: “We were one of 4 courses selected in Britain by the R&A to host the Final Qualifying; Woburn, Cinque Ports and Hillside being the other three.”
Having the two very different courses makes Glasgow Golf Club quite unique. The links course is a great place to play in the winter and the parkland course comes into its own in the summer.
John’s favourite hole is probably the 9th at Gailes. “It is a short hole of about 300 yards with an elevated green. What makes it great is that accuracy of the 2nd shot is premium. If you don’t judge your pitch correctly there is a run off at every side and you can end up going back and forward.”
The hardest hole is probably the 2nd hole at Killermont. John explained why: “It is a 240 yard dog-leg par3! There is a large tree just short of the green which requires you to hit a draw shot with a fairway wood to hit the green which has a large slope from left to right.” Sounds like a real challenge.
While Killermont is a private members course, visitors are very welcome at Gailes links where the club is running a 4ball offer at £260 which is available throughout the summer.
